Xander Mercurius was one of the best pitchers and hitters on the Durango baseball team this season.

The junior pitcher and infielder showed this weekend that he can handle both tasks well to keep the Trailblazers’ state title hopes alive.

Mercury pitched a complete game and went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate in Durango’s 2-1 home win over Sierra Vista in a Class 4A state winners game Saturday.

For his efforts, he was named Nevada Preps Boys Athlete of the Week.

“The defense we had all game and the situational passing moves of our entire team really gave us an edge that helped us win that game,” Mercurius said. “We’re really hyped and ready to go out and put Durango baseball back on the map.”

Durango faces Silverado on Thursday in a 4A state winners game at Faith Lutheran for a spot in Saturday’s title game.

Let’s get to know this week’s Boys Athlete of the Week. (Note: Answers have been edited for clarity and length.)

Preparations for Nevada: Who do you look up to as an MLB player and try to model your game after?

Mercury: I really enjoy watching Marcus Stroman (New York Yankees pitcher) and the way he carries himself on the mound and just as a person.

NP: What is your favorite memory of your baseball career so far?

Mercury: My favorite memory of playing baseball is winning a gold medal with Team USA when I was 15.

NP: If you didn’t play baseball, what sport would you play?

Mercury: I would play basketball because it’s super fun and I’m a born hooper.

NP: Do you have any game day superstitions that you follow?

Mercury: I’m driving to school and the first song I put on is “Hide Away” by Daya. I usually stop by the gas station and get a donut and chocolate milk.

NP: Do you have a meal before the match, a snack or a festive meal after the match?

Mercury: Pregame meal consists of water and Gatorade that my coach gives me. After the game it’s all about In-N-Out Burger. I can never go wrong with a number 1.
