“If Floyd goes to Mexico, he’s not coming back”: Boxing world reacts as Floyd Mayweather reignites bitter feud with Victor Ortiz in exhibition bout

Floyd Mayweather was planning to announce it myself, but alas! Recently, ‘Money’ Mayweather announced that he will appear in the ring again against an unknown opponent! He also suggested he would reveal the identity on May 15, but ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez appears to have gotten around to it first.

Hours ago, Rodriguez jumped on X to announce to the masses that the five-division champion will face a former rival Victor Ortiz on August 24 at the Plaza de Toros México. Ortiz and Mayweather went toe-to-toe in September 2011, with Floyd Mayweather knocking out ‘Vicious’ after the latter headbutted him in the fourth round.

Will Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III repeat?

Rodriguez wrote: “Mayweather in… They tell me that Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather will announce an exhibition fight against Víctor ‘Vicious’ Ortiz for August 24 at the Plaza de Toros México… On Wednesday they give more details… Mayweather KO4 Ortiz in 2011 by him to be caught with his babysitting after a headbutt.”

Floyd is coming off a victory over last year’s John Gotti III, which had ended in an all-out brawl after the referee stopped the fight for trash talk and offensive language in the ring. Although the chances of this happening again are slim, the boxing world is not exactly happy with the match. At least that’s what the comments section of Rodriguez’s tweet indicates!

Fans suggest that no one cares about the fight

Despite retiring from the sport in 2017, Floyd Mayweather has returned to the ring time and time again and fans have rallied behind these exhibition fights. However, there seems to be a change of heart! One user suggested that Victor is relatively unknown in Mexico! But that could be because Ortiz was born in the United States, Garden City, Kansas, to be precise.

Another user wondered who would actually want to see this fight! While ‘Money’ may not be as popular as he once was, he still has a loyal fan base, who will definitely be watching to see the fight.

Even the next user echoed the same sentiment, suggesting that absolutely no one cares about the fight. However, that can only be determined when the fight actually takes place.

Someone else brought up the Mexican cartels and claimed that if Floyd decided to go to Mexico, he would never return to the US. The user wrote, If Floyd goes to Mexico and he doesn’t come back, the cartel will buy off the security. The event won’t be worth going to the mafia for.”

One user suggested that a fight against Manny Pacquiao or Juan Manuel Marquez could have been a worthwhile fight, but no one knows Ortiz. Although he failed to achieve fame like Mayweather, Ortiz has faced some of the best fighters of his era.

That said, Floyd Mayweather hasn’t even been able to announce his opponent, and fans seem to be following his cause. While Ortiz isn’t the most exciting opponent, it would be interesting to see what their old rivalry yields in August! Would you like to watch this fight?
