Aztecs face No. 15/15 Virginia Tech in LA Regional

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State softball team will play No. 15/15 Virginia Tech in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional, the NCAA announced Sunday. It’s the 14th NCAA regular-season tournament bid for the Mountain West and tournament champion Aztecs (31-18) and third straight under third-year head coach Stacey Nuveman Deniz.

SDSU, which earned an automatic bid to the tournament after winning its second straight Mountain West tournament this weekend, will play the Hokies (39-12-1) Friday at 3 p.m. PT at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles on the campus of No. 6/6 UCLA (37-10), the tournament’s No. 6 overall seed. Grand Canyon (48-11) is the other team in the regional double elimination.

The entire NCAA Los Angeles Regional will be broadcast live on ESPN Networks, while San Diego State and Virginia Tech will play on ESPNU.

San Diego State, which also appeared in the tournament in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2022 and 2023, is 22-26 all-time in the NCAA Championship.

The Aztecs are playing in Los Angeles for the sixth time of their fourteen appearances in an NCAA regional (also in 2001, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2023), with a 13-10 record at Easton Stadium. Last season, the Aztecs won all three games in Los Angeles to advance to the super regional, defeating Liberty 7-0, Grand Canyon 6-0 and Liberty again 6-3. In the Salt Lake City Super Regional, the Aztecs won 4-3 over No. 17/15 (14)

San Diego State is the only team to make the NCAA Tournament from the Mountain West.

This year’s national tournament features 64 teams, with four teams competing in a double-elimination tournament at 16 regional locations. The regional winners will advance to a super-regional competition for a best-of-three series at eight campus locations from May 23 to 26. The remaining eight teams advance to the Women’s College World Series (WCWS), an eight-team double-elimination tournament with the championship finals being a best-of-three series. The WCWS will be held from May 30 to June 6 and 7 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
