William Contreras becomes the first catcher since Ivan Rodriguez in 2000 to accomplish the rare feat

Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras is playing like an MVP candidate. General Manager Matt Arnold made this statement before Mother’s Day, when his offensive numbers at the time were comparable to those of Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts. Since then, the 26-year-old has continued to hit and achieve something that was last done by Ivan Rodriguez in the year 2000.

William Contreras had more than 50 hits in Milwaukee Brewers’ first 40 games.

Splitting time between catcher and design hitter William Contreras hasn’t missed a game for the Brewers this year. He has been their offensive leader and has currently collected 54 goals. This currently places him third in the league, behind only Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts, who both have 56 hits.

Ivan Rodriguez was the last catcher to have at least 50 hits in a team’s first 40 games.

According to StatMuse MLB, the last time a catcher had 50 or more hits in the first 40 games of a season was in 2000. Ivan Rodriguez was the player who did this. That year he had 59 hits in 40 games with the Texas Rangers.

William Contreras is on his way to becoming a special player.

Through 334 career games and 1,203 plate appearances, William Contreras has put up some excellent offensive numbers. He has a .284/.363/.472 career slash line and is already halfway to 100 home runs. 2024 is his second full season in the major leagues and he once again lays claim to being the best offensive catcher in the world.
