Michigan softball plays Kentucky in NCAA Tournament opener

It was no surprise that the Michigan softball team would be in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big Ten Tournament on Saturday, but now the Wolverines know their destination.

Michigan, which missed the NCAA Tournament last season in Bonnie Tholl’s first season as head coach, earned the Big Ten’s automatic bid and is headed to the Stillwater Regional, hosted by Oklahoma State. The Wolverines face Kentucky on ESPN2 on Friday at 3 p.m. Northern Colorado and Oklahoma State, which has hosted a regional site for the past four seasons, are the other two teams in the region.

This is the second Michigan team to play in Stillwater, Oklahoma this weekend. The third-ranked women’s tennis team will take on Pepperdine in the NCAA Elite 8 on Friday at 2:30 PM ET. Oklahoma State will host the men’s and women’s tennis national championship.

The Michigan softball team won its 11th Big Ten Conference title as the No. 2 seed with a 3-1 victory over Indiana at Bob Pearl Field in Iowa. This was the first tournament title for the Wolverines (41-16) since 2019. They failed to make the NCAA Tournament last year for the first time since 1994 and the players say that has motivated them this season.
