Smoke from wildfires, poor air quality likely from Sunday night to Monday

Here’s your Sunday evening forecast for May 12, 2024 from Minnesota’s Weather Authority and meteorologist Matt Serwe.

An air quality warning is in effect for all of Minnesota until noon Monday and for all of Wisconsin until 10 a.m. Monday.

A cold front continues to slowly move south across the state this evening. Isolated rain and storms are possible southeast of the Twin Cities until sunset before the front. Behind the front, the north wind is pulling in Canadian wildfire smoke for the first time this season. Unhealthy air is likely to move across northern and central Minnesota Sunday evening and enter the Twin Cities metro after sunset. The smoke will dissipate somewhat by morning, but people with chronic heart or lung problems may have a tough morning on Monday. This also includes children with asthma who walk to school!

Monday and Tuesday will be beautiful. High pressure will keep skies mostly clear and highs will seasonally be in the low 70s. The jet stream will become more active in the second half of the week. A series of weak waves will move across the northern United States beginning Wednesday evening. We will see several periods of scattered rain and some chances of thunderstorms Thursday through Sunday. None of these will keep you indoors all day, but you should keep an eye on the radar if you have outdoor plans.
